Evercade Review & The Importance (or not) of Physical Media
Thursday Sep 17, 2020
Thursday Sep 17, 2020
The much-hyped Evercade dropped earlier this year and appears to have been a commercial success but is the thing any good? Nathan's sent us a unit to review which Adrian promptly bought off him (bit of a clue how this is gonna go there). James joins us in Keith's absence for a chat about said item and also the worth of physical media in this day and age.

Our Top 25 SEGA Master System Games - Feat. Sonic, Rampart & Psycho Fox
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Our Mega Drive Top 25 was such a disaster we thought we'd do it all again for its older brother!
No spoilers (as usual) but we can divulge that we've brought in our resident 'Master System' specialist to make up the numbers and mix it up. Please welcome our good bud James to the podcast! Rob takes up hosting responsibilities for this one.

Ten scary gaming myths and urban legends that rocked the gaming world.
We look at how the E.T. Atari 2600 game almost destroyed an industry and was dumped in a landfill. Can you play as Rebecca in Resident Evil 2? Did Killswitch, a game that uninstalls itself actually exist? And lots more stories to get your teeth into!
*Warning - this podcast contains adult themes (LOL) so it's up to you to shield your offspring or those of a sensitive disposition. Or let them loose on the madness!*
Adult theme jokes aside we're back! With another gaming myths podcast! I'd like to say it's because the first one went so well but it's due to the fact that Adrian found too many to fit in one! Ha ha!
This week we tackle myths concerning games uninstalling themselves, a certain Final Fantasy VIII theory and what actually happened to those "spare" copies of the Atari E.T among many other weird and wacky tales. We also laugh at our own conspiracy theories.

This has been a long (ish) time coming. Covid poses its own problems but it also opens up new opportunities. We invited three of our mates from the other side of the world - ...Since Spacies (Brian); Sega Master Tim (Tim); and The Top Loader (Todd) - to do battle with us over the airwaves. Well, not quite...
The boys join Ade and Dylan for a chat about SEGA, Nintendo, Brian and Tim working for the SEGA Hotline, what collecting means to us, why heart attacks are bad, Aussie slang (we're sure Adrian is NOT a drongo) and a few subjects we always cover on AA. Yeah, you know the ones! So sit back and enjoy a whopping two-hour chat with Australia's finest.

Michael Latham (SEGA) - Interview - Eternal Champions & True SEGA Legend
Thursday Aug 20, 2020
Thursday Aug 20, 2020
Oh we've a real treat for you SEGA fans this week! SEGA's 'Mr No' Michael Latham, the Eternal Champions creator had a mammoth chat (over two hours) with our Adrian about everything and anything!
We won't spoil the surprise too much but our highlights include Michael covering his time working at Activision (Ghostbusters/Power Drift), meeting (and winning over) Michael Jackson, stopping a buggy Sonic 2 flying out to production, working on many 32X games (three of which were unreleased) and the never-ending battle between SEGA of Japan and SEGA of America. There's even a nice George Lucas story in there!
And here's the previous written Q&A we did with the legend himself.

Gaming Myths Vol.1 - Feat. Polybius, The Madden Curse & Sonic 3's Soundtrack
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Did the infamous Polybius arcade game ever exist? Does the Madden curse actually stop footballers in their track? Was the Sonic 3 soundtrack actually written by Michael Jackson? And can you save Aerith's life in Final Fantasy VII?
*Warning - this podcast contains adult themes so the little uns probably shouldn't be present. Or maybe so, it's up to you!*
Oh you'd better believe there's a second volume of this in a few weeks! Adrian has come up with podcast gold to present to you a menagerie of gaming myths (retro and current) to sink your teeth into. Well, for Dyl and Rob to sink their teeth into while pulling funny faces that you can't see because this is an audio-only podcast.
Sonic 3, Polybius, the Madden curse, Aeris' death in FF7 and lots lots more!

Faran Thomason worked across 3 of the largest video game companies of all time; Atari, SEGA and Nintendo. Faran shares some great stories including working on the Atari Jaguar, Mortal Kombat 3 and loads of insight on all 3 companies.
This week's guest may be the only person we've ever interviewed who's worked for Atari, Nintendo and SEGA - the magic three! Faran Thomason kindly gave us some of his time a while ago for a text interview but we simply had to chat to him to get more of those stories out.
Especially a treat for Atari Jaguar fans, Adrian talks to the producer, QA tester and level designer himself about Bubsy, Baldies, Cybermorph and the abandoned Jag version of Mortal Kombat 3 among many other lovely retro gaming stories about all three legendary companies. He also talks about making consoles in China, Black Lives Matter, what the Tramiels were really like and working with the legendary Lance Henriksen. Enjoy!

Mortal Kombat: The Movie & Mortal Kombat Annihilation
Thursday Jul 30, 2020
Thursday Jul 30, 2020
Why on earth do we do this to ourselves?! Ha ha! It's of course a pleasure every time! This week we tackle the Mortal Kombat Movies... Rob summons every ounce of strength to bring forward this critique of both movies with lots of trivia thrown in for good measure. One of the team is dragged along against his will (guess who) so it's up to the others to convince him they're both worth watching. Or not.

Enjoy our rundown of the top 25 SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis video games ever released. From Sonic 2 to Street Fighter, Gunstar Heroes to Shinobi. Plus a few strange choices to get your blood boiling. We expect nothing less than an almighty ton of vitriol from you and the entire retro gaming community!
Our Amiga Top 25 went so well we thought we'd do it again with our favourite console and without Tim's "lovely and highly complex algorithm", it could have gone better... But kudos to Adrian for coming up with a (tweaked a bit by Dylan, so let's blame him) way of taking Ade's, Rob's, Tim's, Keith's, Faith's, Chris's and Dylan's top 10 MD/Genesis games and compiling this list.

Comic History, Favourite Comic-Based Video Games and Favourite Characters
Thursday Jul 16, 2020
Thursday Jul 16, 2020
Forgive the long title, I really couldn't think of a way to shorten it, ha ha! We haven't put Chris off since last week so he's back to chat comic book heroes/villains and favourite comic-based video games with us. But not before Rob tells us a bit of comic book history and how they and video games are a match made in heaven.
Enjoy our look at some of the best video games based around our favourite comics. We look at the evolution of some of the best games made, such as Batman to X-Men Arcade and a look at Spiderman on the PS4. Plus a lot more comic book chat.
Comic book films even make an appearance! 80 minutes of comic-based ambrosia, whadda ya waiting for!

Comic Book & Retro Gaming Chat with Chris McAuley (Marvel Artist / Utomik)
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
Chris McAuley is a Northern Irish born author, comic book and gaming columnist who has now branched out from talking about comics to helping create them. An acclaimed colourist for 2000 AD and Marvel he has worked on flagship titles such as Judge Dredd, Roy of the Rovers and Hulkverines. He now works on the official Stoker Dracula comics.
We thought it's about time we introduced you to our second-newest member (Retro Faith just pips him as the newest), Chris McAuley!
Chris has done a lot of colouring work for Marvel and some of you may have bumped into him at a comic convention or two. His road to working for them and dev house Utomik is quite something! We've dragged him along to chat about his career, comics, games based on comics and how he came into our lives (and boy, does Adrian have a story to tell about that!)
Next week we'll be discussing the history of comic books and their influence on games. We're also chatting about our favourite comic-based movies and games so be sure not to miss that one!

Double Dragon - The Movie - An Underrated Video Game Movie Gem?!
Thursday Jun 25, 2020
Thursday Jun 25, 2020
Double Dragon the Movie is a 1994 martial arts family film based on the beat-em up series of the same name. Starring Mark Dacascos and Scott Wolf as brothers Jimmy and Billy Lee, along with Alyssa Milano (Commando) as Marian Delario and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2 fame) as antagonist Koga Shuko. Double Dragon gets the Arcade Attack movie review treatment.
The things we do for you lot! We've all had a lovely watch of the Double Dragon movie thanks to someone tweeting us at Christmas to do it (as part of our Secret Santa reveal, of course). Rob was gifted said movie so here he is after many weeks of painstaking research, withered and worn, to give his take on Billy & jimmy's excellent adventure. Spinach, anyone?

Resident Evil 3 - How Does the Remake Compare with the PlayStation Classic?
Thursday Jun 18, 2020
Thursday Jun 18, 2020
Stylishly late to the party as ever, here's our take on Resident Evil 3 old and new.
Keith (who else) guides us through the PlayStation original and what he (re)makes of 2020's effort. And we try not to draw parallels between Jill's fight in Raccoon City and current events. Try.

Streets of Rage / Bare Knuckle Pt.2 (SOR3, SORemake and SOR4)
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
Warning: This pod contains adult themes, adult language and not our usual lovely selves (mostly our lovely selves).
It's the moment you've been waiting for! Indeed, Rob throws everything he's got into supporting Streets of Rage 3 much to Dylan's disgust (he'll blame it on the beer, we'd probably say Dyl was just being an ass, ha ha!)
The gang turn to Adrian to guide the discussion about Remake, which none of them have played. Adrian's sound difficulties also provide some much needed comic relief.
And finally we discuss the game we've been waiting 24 years for confirmation of. One thing we cannot confirm is that Dyl doesn't work for Microsoft. You'll see what we mean...

Streets of Rage 1 & 2 / Bare Knuckle Pt.1 (SOR and SOR2)
Thursday Jun 04, 2020
Thursday Jun 04, 2020
The first of our Streets of Rage double bill features the seminal Streets of Rage and its bigger, badder sequel. You'll have to wait until next week for Dyl and Rob's bickering about SOR3, Ade's take on SOR Remake, and what Dyl makes of SOR4 (as no one else could be bothered to play it!)
Just another brawler? Just another Final Fight clone? The Streets of Rage series brought a few more things to the table. The gang try to decipher it all under Keith's careful supervision (SOR1) and Dyl's not-so-careful supervision (for the SOR2 bit).
So strap yourselves in for another pun-filled/jibes-aplenty/slightly-more-research-than-Wikipedia/remote AA podcast...

The Story of Another World - Eric Chahi Interview
Thursday May 28, 2020
Thursday May 28, 2020
Eric Chahi created the Amiga classic Another World (Out of This World), Future Wars, Heart of Darkness and Paper Beast. In this interview Éric looks at how he developed one of the most iconic games of all time and what inspires him to make such original video games.
Adrian loves Another World. Hell, all of us (except Rob, grrrr) do! And he's shown that persistence pays off. After months of harassment - I mean, er, nice messages - the legendary Eric Chahi finally agreed to a chat. Certainly one for all you Amiga aficionados!

The Nintendo Wii & Wii U Console Chat - One of the Most Innovative Consoles
Thursday May 07, 2020
Thursday May 07, 2020
How innovative was the Nintendo Wii!? Everyone seemed to own one and play Wii Sports. Why was this Nintendo console so popular? Plus, why was the Wii U such a failure? Enjoy our chat about both of these divisive game consoles.
So here is the last of our pre-coviddy lockdown backlog podcasts and it's quite apt that we discuss the console that really brought people together. Even your grandparents.
Nintendo struck gold with their motion-driven console, the Wii. But why was it so popular? We (wii?) discuss our favourite Wii moments as well as some of the console's key titles. We also question whether the thing is really retro at all and Adrian puts up a solid (sort of) defence of the Wii-U.
