Mike Clarke (Psygnosis) - Interview
Thursday Mar 19, 2020
Thursday Mar 19, 2020
Mike Clarke was Psygnosis' trusted sound guru. A lot of their hit titles like the WipEout and Lemmings games were given the gloss they deserved from this man.
His stories about how the company worked are fascinating but the main flavour is brought by the Walker game that never was. Yes, there was a PS3 Walker game in the pipeline and Mike divulges all. He even let us use music that he created for the game. So, sit back and enjoy.

Thursday Mar 05, 2020
Virtua Racing became one of the most influential arcade games of all time. SEGA's arcade racer laid the foundations for many subsequent 3D racing titles. The racing classic gets the full Arcade Attack treatment and the various console ports are discussed.
What game blew you away the most at first sight? Rob throws his cap to the crowd this week and dives into Sega’s 90’s arcade peak to talk about his choice. Dire Straits get a mention too but don’t worry, it’s brief.

Creating Age of Empires - Matt Pritchard Interview
Thursday Feb 27, 2020
Thursday Feb 27, 2020
Age of Empires (AoE) is one of the most important video games ever made. The series had sold 15 million units even before the third instalment! Matt Pritchard was a key cog in the Ensemble machine for the first two AoE games, his programming expertise vital in making them what they were.
Lots of AoE chat and he also touches on his time at Valve and what Half Life 3 could have been (maybe still will be). His humility and refusal to pull any punches makes this a must-listen (well, we would say that).

Sonic the Hedgehog - Movie Review
Tuesday Feb 18, 2020
Tuesday Feb 18, 2020
Sonic the Hedgehog the movie caused controversy even before it was released. SEGA's spikey mascot spins into the big screen and gets the full Arcade Attack treatment. We look at the films development, the story, the actors such as Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and our overall opinion on the film.
We love you lot so much we've brought next week's podcast forward just so you can hear what we think about the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
The first half is a spoiler-free review but the second half contains a LOT of spoilers. Rob introduces the action...

The Bitmap Brothers Tribute - Speedball, Chaos Engine, Gods & Xenon
Thursday Feb 13, 2020
Thursday Feb 13, 2020
The Bitmap Brothers created some of the best games ever made. From Speedball 2 to Gods, The Chaos Engine to Xenon 2 and Magic Pockets to Z. We give this classic company the tribute it deserves.
Rebellion have recently acquired the back catalogue of The Bitmap Brothers so we thought it fitting to pay the defunct company a tribute. Well, Dylan and Adrian anyway. Yep, it's one of those heart-to-heart episodes you "love" so much!
From Speedball to Chaos Engine, Xenon to Gods, the lads have a good ol' chinwag about the East London dev house with Attitude. They also cover their hopes for what Rebellion will come up with for this IP. A VR Speedball? We can only hope.
And yes, the capital A was totally on purpose.

Wanna hear Dylan's attempt at winging a music podcast? Well, here ya go! Months have passed since Keith's amazing Mega Drive/Genesis Boss music podcast so Dyl took it upon himself to put together his favourite retro gaming tracks for those drives down to the shops.
He talks a bit, you're probably not going to learn much about the games chosen (Lotus 2, SoR 2, SF2, Sonic 3, Devil May Cry etc...) but you will learn how trying to put one of these together can turn retro gaming podcasters insane. Enjoy!

Dylan going bad acapella (SoR 2) here and with Adrian (SF2) here! You have been warned!

The Story of DOOM & Quake - Tim Willits (id Software) Interview [AAPOD154]
Thursday Jan 30, 2020
Thursday Jan 30, 2020
The id Software legend Tim Willits joins our Adrian for a no holds barred chat about creating the Quake games, leading design on DOOM 3 and what he really thinks about some of his former id colleagues (you've probably guessed who we're on about).
Greener pastures await him at Saber Interactive after around 24 years at id. Think you've heard all there is to know about Quake and DOOM? Think again! Tim's truly got his BFG out for this one and we loved it, hope you will too.

Desert Island Diskettes - 5 Must Have Retro Games Challenge
Friday Jan 24, 2020
Friday Jan 24, 2020
You're stuck on a desert island. You somehow have full electricity, a TV and a game console of your choice. Which 5 retro games would you take with you to keep you sane before you are rescued?
Friend of the show Andy came up with a lovely idea for us to rip off a popular Radio 4 segment, we'll leave you to guess the rest ;)
Adrian, Rob and Dylan venture their choices and there's only a bit of Atari Jaguar stuff in there. Kidding, obviously...

Walker (DMA Design)
Thursday Jan 16, 2020
Thursday Jan 16, 2020
Walker was a really popular side-scrolling shooter for the Amiga game, developed by DMA Design. It also had a novel control system and showed off some of the best graphics ever achieved on an Amiga title. So buckle up in your Walker robot and press play!
Do yourself a favour and for the first minute or so crank the volume UP!
Ian Dunlop and Neill Glancy's side-scrolling shooter captured the imagination of our Adrian and Dylan when they were teenagers. It struck such a chord with Adrian that he's structured a whole podcast about it! Also channelling Scott Johnston's supreme mech animations, Raymond Usher's thumping soundtrack and DMA Design's David Jones pulling the strings, it received 80%+ reviews across the board.
The keyboard (or joystick) and mouse combination was revolutionary at the time and made for satisfying action. But was it all a bed of roses? The boys are here to pick it all apart...

Saturday Jan 11, 2020
Alex Trowers made some true classics while working at Bullfrog. He worked on Syndicate, Magic Carpet, Hi-Octane, Dungeon Keeper 2, PowerMonger and Populous 2. Alex shares some amazing stories while working at one of the most innovative video game companies of the 90's.
I really don't think we've interviewed enough Bullfrog employees so in addition to Sean Cooper and Mark Webley we've now sent Adrian to seek out the legendary Alex Trowers, level designer on awesome games such as: Syndicate; Magic Carpet; Hi-Octane; Populous II and PowerMonger!

Bonus Podcast: PlayStation Classic Wrongness
Wednesday Jan 08, 2020
Wednesday Jan 08, 2020
How wrong can Arcade Attack be about something? Well, confirming many of yours suspicions, quite a bloody lot, especially as far as the PlayStation Classic is concerned!
Listen to the podcast that was scheduled to come out before the final lineup for the console was announced only for Sony to get the jump on us! We luckily pulled it at the last minute but here it is so you can all have a good laugh as to how wrong we were. Wouldn't you rather our lineup though? ;)

2010 to 2020: A Decade of Retro Gaming
Friday Jan 03, 2020
Friday Jan 03, 2020
As we face a brand new decade full of the promise of the new we’ve naturally decided to look backwards, at 10 years when retro gaming really staked a claim in the mainstream. Revamps, reissues, tournaments, bars and, of course, the characters that helped cement retro gaming's place in culture.

Max Payne
Friday Dec 27, 2019
Friday Dec 27, 2019
The American dream turned sour, Max Payne is the outlawed cop hellbent on revenge after the murder of his family. The 3rd person shooter brought many things to the fore so it's only right that Adrian and Dylan enter bullet-time to chew the fat/painkillers to get to the bottom of the original game, its successful sequels and the not-so-great Marky Mark film.

Friday Nov 29, 2019
Friday Nov 29, 2019
It's not often we invite an interviewee back for another pod. It's not often the ones we do ask agree! We're big fans of David Craddock's and he's back with a new book titled "Arcade Perfect" detailing arcade games' journeys to the home console including AA favourite's such as Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam.
Adrian chatted to David about the book, their shared love of arcade games and the immense amount of work required to get those classics into your living room.

The SEGA 32X
Friday Nov 22, 2019
Friday Nov 22, 2019
I mean, the thing only sold 800,000 units but damn was there a lot to enjoy on it. The Genesis/Mega Drive peripheral brought 32-bit power (OK that's debatable) to your home for cheaper than a Saturn. But why? Thanks to a mystery source (listen to the pod to find out who) Adrian now has the hallowed contraption. But what does he make of it and his initial batch of games? Ohhhhhhh here goes!
